CHRISTMAS TREES- NOT JUST FOR DECORATING
Christmas Trees in the Spring, Christmas Trees are for December! However, there is much much more to Christmas Trees than decorating them in December. Come learn about trees in general and how they help the environment. This is what GREEN is all about.
Over 99% of the trees used in homes today are grown on farms just for that purpose. Trees grown in this manner are actually a specialty forest, offering the same benefits as what we associate with a “normal” forest.
During its stay on the farm, your Christmas tree helped clean the air and the water, stabilized the soil, and provided shelter for wildlife. It also provided jobs for the people who took care of them, as well as the people who make and sell the products used by its caretakers. Other gifts given by these trees are that they are grown in the U.S.A., are a renewable resource, and are 100% recyclable.
In the spring of 2010, May-Lan Tree Plantation will offer third and fourth graders the chance to learn of the relationship this specialty forest has with a “normal” forest and the importance they play in a number of areas. Our staff, composed of retired teachers, will be using creative, interactive and hands-on teaching strategies to conduct three lively sessions. The following standard topics will be taught through Christmas trees and their role in the forest.
WILDLIFE - TREE LIFE CYCLES
THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF TREESStudents will be taking home important environmental knowledge, projects made during the sessions, plus each class will receive a tree to plant.
You can use us as supplemental instruction for what you have already taught or as a review for the up-coming PASS test.
We will be offering these classes Tuesday-Friday, April 13 through May 7, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. There will be three 50-minute learning sessions plus a short snack break provided by us. May-Lan’s staff will be performing our version of “The Giving Tree” as the introduction and closing. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy before going back to school.
To maximize the learning experience, we will require one teacher/chaperone per 15 students. Adults, other than those who will be serving as the required number of chaperones, will not be allowed to attend the learning sessions.
The cost will be $10.00 per student. This price includes all materials, take-home items and snacks. There is no charge for teachers/chaperones.
To aid in our planning, the final date for registration is Friday, March 26, 2010.
To register your class(es) please fill out the Registration Form.. Should you have questions please do not hesitate to call.
